kmart

There are adverts on all the time at the moment talking about Kmart and Walmart lay away programs. In case you do not know what layaway is, you put a small deposit (normally $5) down on an item then make regular payments over a set period and once you have paid it all then you get the item. Sounds great doesn’t it, but there is normally a few bits of smallprint.

  • You pay the price on the day you put it into layaway, no matter if the price drops a day later you have to pay the higher price.
  • If you cancel you lose at least the original deposit generally, some stores will charge more
  • You must have paid for the item by December 1st (again some stores may have different payment day
Kmart allow 8 or 12 week spread of payments and as long as you make regular payments then all will be well.
The real question is can you do lay away on items you get during the Day After Thanksgiving 2011 sales? Generally the answer seems to be no. The stores are selling stuff off at bargain prices and they do not want to wait 8 weeks to get paid for it all.
Is Layaway a good choice?
Not really, you are best off saving as much cash up as you can and then  look for real deals. If you can buy during the thanksgiving sales then you can save so much money that you will not have to do any kind of layaway

Lets be honest there are some wonderful deals already available and the prices on some items (TV’s come to mind) are truly not ones to be missed.

For most of the year the big box stores make a huge thing out of the fact that they price match. You go into Best Buy show them that the local Walmart is selling a Sony TV for $399 and they will price match, that is the basic idea (i am sure there are some rules I have missed but that is it in a snapshot).

So some people will be thinking rather than getting up at 3am to be in line at Target by 3.30 ready for their 5am opening I will go to kmart who don’t open till 7am and ask them to price match.

On any other weekend of the year this would be a sound plan however it won’t work on Thanksgiving weekend, the stores do not price match from the sheets that they call “door runners” (thanks to Cameron for teaching me the lingo).

So you will need to either get up very early or stay in bed and just pay the extra $20. I know which I am picking, give me the duvet back..
